Ensuring Aviation Fuel Quality from Refinery to Flight Deck
Aviation fuel undergoes rigorous purification to meet ASTM D1655 and DEF STAN 91-91 standards. Even trace levels of polar impurities—such as surface-active compounds, organic acids, and surfactants—can cause thermal instability, filter blockages, and engine deposits at high altitudes. Activated clay granules act as the final purification step, adsorbing these contaminants before fuel reaches aircraft tanks.
With global jet fuel demand projected to grow at 4-5% annually through 2030, refineries and fuel terminals require reliable, cost-effective adsorbents that maintain fuel integrity across storage, handling, and flight operations.
Technical Challenges in Fuel Purification
Aviation fuel purification systems face several operational challenges:
- Thermal Instability - Polar compounds break down at high temperatures, forming gums and deposits that clog fuel filters and injectors
- Surfactant Contamination – Surface-active agents from refining or pipeline transport cause emulsions and water separation issues
- Colour Reversion – Residual trace metals and aromatic compounds darken fuel during storage, signaling quality degradation
- Filter Differential Pressure – Fine particulates and degraded fuel components increase pressure drop across filtration systems
- Short Bed Life – Inadequate adsorption capacity leads to frequent media changes and operational downtime
